Distress Foundry Wax needs a little tooth to grip.  I have been brushing smooth surfaces 

with Matte Collage Medium before the Foundry Wax. Yes, it does impart the texture of the 

brushstrokes but, this doesn't bother me. I brushed matte collage medium over the flat parts

 of the Industrial Gear and the pointy end of the Adornment Arrow.
